Our Process

Commitment to Quality,
Every Step of the Way

North American Tie and Timber is a privately owned company founded in 2003. Our senior management group has over 100 years of combined experience in the railroad and timber industry. Our treating plant, completed in late 2020, is strategically located in Scott City, Missouri, and is one of the industry’s newest and most environmentally friendly.

Procurement

For North American it all starts with our exceptional procurement team and process.

From our origin as a green tie procurement specialist, we have developed quality relationships with over 400 sawmills in 22 states. Our team of buyers has many years of experience procuring the best quality ties and timbers, and we have tie yards in 10 towns in 8 states.

Our material is then transported by rail or truck to our treating plant or the plants of one of our long-standing partners to be processed and treated.

Processing

In this step, the ties are trimmed to length and graded. They are then incised and put through an end-plating process. We end plate 100% of our ties. At this point, the ties are packaged for treatment.

Treating

We are proud to say that our treatment process is one of the most environmentally friendly in the industry. All of our water and air emissions are totally incinerated through a thermal oxidation process, which is different from most treating plants in the industry. We have two 120-foot-long cylinders, both 8 feet in diameter. The ties are trammed into the cylinders, filled with creosote, sterilized at high temperatures, and then pressed to ensure proper retention and penetration of creosote.

We treat air-dried ties and also use the Boulton process. This allows us to handle high volumes for our customers.
